Breaking: 5-Star Guard Tre Johnson Signs with Texas Longhorns
The Texas Longhorns have acquired one of the best players since Rodney Terry by acquiring Tre Johnson.
Texas’s Austin On Wednesday, the Texas Longhorns upset the collegiate basketball recruiting class of 2024.
Tre Johnson, a five-star guard from Link Academy (Branson, MO) and a native of Dallas, has committed to Texas and officially signed with them.
In his final two selections, Johnson chose Texas over in-state rival Baylor, ranking No. 5 overall in 247Sports’ 2024 rankings.
Shortly after Cam Scott and Nic Codie signed NLOIs, the Longhorns signed Johnson.
I’ve always had an excellent relationship with [Rodney Terry]. At Baylor, Johnson served as his father’s assistant coach, Johnson previously disclosed to On3 of Texas. We’ve always gotten along well, and I think he’s going to do incredibly well as head coach. In addition, he uses the larger guards in the post and allows his guards play. The athletes who (during the visit) stood out. The gym is open around-the-clock, and everyone uses it.
With the exception of Baylor, which extended their offer to Johnson until August 1, 2021, Johnson has had an offer from Texas since December 7, 2021. Sept. 17, 2022, was his formal visit to Austin.
Although Baylor was the clear favorite to get Johnson, the fact that he was close to Terry for a long time probably had an impact on the choice. Johnson’s early signing with the Longhorns during the early signing period is indicative of his faith in the school.
