Steelers players want Mason Rudolph back.
The Pittsburgh Steelers will make a decision on their quarterback later this offseason, but for the time being, players are hoping Mason Rudolph is the choice.
Pittsburgh — The Pittsburgh Steelers enter the summer with a lot of questions. Mike Tomlin’s announcement to players that he will return in 2024 addresses their largest concern, propelling their quarterback issue to the top of the list. However, if you inquire around the locker room, Mason Rudolph appears to be their guy to keep.
Some believe the Steelers will give Kenny Pickett another chance in 2024 to capture the starting job and become Pittsburgh’s next franchise quarterback. His first-round status is fairly secure in the NFL, but his 13 touchdowns to 13 interceptions are less enticing.
For those who do not consider draft stock, such as the other players in the locker room, Rudolph’s tenure as a starter brought more hope for the future.
“I’d been on the Mason plane before, so I wasn’t surprised when he didn’t do it. “I kind of had high hopes of him doing what he’s been doing since he became the starter,” wide receiver Diontae Johnson said following the Bills’ loss. “I hope he gets the job next year, and do what he’s got to do, but he did a great job in my opinion.”
The Steelers will need to re-sign Rudolph and will most likely compete with other teams to have him audition for their starting job. He signed a one-year, $1 million contract this summer after receiving little to no interest from other teams.
While money is always important in the NFL, opportunity will most likely be as well. Will the Steelers inform Rudolph he can return and be the starter in 2024?
“I’m expecting that,” running back Jaylen Warren told the Steelers. “He went out there and did his thing, which we all witnessed. Very competitive. He put the ball where it needed to be.”
