With Bruce Arians’ resignation, Bucs defensive coordinator Todd Bowles will take over as head coach in Tampa Bay.
Bruce Arians has just announced his retirement as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In his place, the team will promote from within, with defensive coordinator Todd Bowles taking the reigns.
Many people are shocked by the news, since Arians was slated to manage the Bucs again this season. Todd Bowles is an established NFL coach who has served as the Buccaneers’ defensive coordinator for the past three seasons.
Before joining the Bucs, Bowles was the New York Jets’ head coach from 2015 to 2018. His record in New York was not very impressive (24-40), but he did not have the caliber of club he presently has in Tampa Bay.
The decision to promote from inside makes a lot sense. The players are familiar with Bowles, having spent the previous three seasons with him, and the relationship between Bowles and the Arians dates back 39 years, when the younger Bowles played for Arians at Temple University.
According to Adam Schefter, this move also marks a historical moment.
Bowles issued a statement shortly after the news broke in the mainstream media about his hiring as Bucs head coach.
Bowles appears to be very happy to be given another chance as an NFL head coach, and with the team he has around him, he has a strong chance of succeeding. Now the issue is, will Tampa Bay make any more shocking changes now that they have made another change?
Bucs name Kevin Carberry as offensive line coach.
Following the introduction of new Offensive Coordinator Liam Coen, the Bucs moved to build out his offensive support staff, beginning with the hiring of former Saints assistant Kevin Carberry on Wednesday.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers sought within their own division to replace one of their coaching vacancies. On Wednesday, the Buccaneers announced the hiring of Kevin Carberry, a former New Orleans Saints assistant, as offensive line coach.
Carberry succeeds Joe Gilbert, who followed Dave Canales to Carolina to occupy the same role on the Panthers’ staff. He is the first new addition to the Bucs’ offensive staff under Liam Coen, who was officially presented as offensive coordinator last Tuesday. The Bucs
Last season, Carberry served as the Saints’ assistant offensive line coach. Prior to that, he spent two seasons as the offensive line coach for the Los Angeles Rams under Sean McVay. In 2022, Carberry collaborated with Coen, who was the Rams’ offensive coordinator.
Carberry’s NFL coaching career began in 2014, when he joined the Dallas Cowboys as an offensive assistant for two years. He was later hired by Washington as an assistant offensive line coach from 2016 to 2017, before returning to college for a three-season stay (2018-20) as Stanford’s run game coordinator and offensive line coach. Carberry also coached at Kansas and Stephen F. Austin before entering the NFL.
Carberry, a former defensive lineman at Ohio, signed with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent in 2005 but spent his first season on the Detroit Lions’ practice squad. In 2006, he attended training camp with the Carolina Panthers and also played for the NFL Europe team, the Berlin Thunder. He went on to play for the Arena League’s New York Dragons and Philadelphia Soul.
Last season, Carberry contributed to a Saints offense that finished ninth in the NFL in scoring (23.3 points per game) and allowed the sixth fewest sacks per pass attempt (5.78). In 2021, his first season as the Rams’ offensive line coach, his team had the ninth lowest sack rate allowed, at 5.11%.
