The Tennessee Vols received some great news on Monday evening, but could that good news hurt their chances with one of their top remaining 2024 recruiting targets?

Offensive tackle John Campbell announced on Monday evening that he’s returning to Tennessee for his final season of eligibility. Campbell should hold down the left tackle spot for the Vols in 2024 after starting 10 games at the position in 2023.

Getting Campbell back for another season is tremendous news for Tennessee. The Miami transfer graded out as Tennessee’s second best pass blocker (72.8) behind right guard Javontez Spraggins (76.8) in 2023 according to Pro Football Focus.

Campbell’s return, however, could have an impact on 2024 five-star offensive tackle Jordan Seaton’s upcoming decision.

Seaton, who will announce his commitment on Thursday, is interested in early “position availability”. That’s something that Ohio State, one of the top options for Seaton, can offer the talented recruit next fall.

“The biggest highlight for me was the position availability they (Ohio State) will have next year,” said Seaton to On3 after his visit to Ohio State this past weekend. “There are a lot of seniors on the team and a lot of guys they call developmental guys that will take another year or two to have a chance. They think I am a plug-in-and-play type of guy.”

Tennessee could have an opening at right tackle, though right tackle Gerald Mincey, who has one season of eligibility remaining, is expected to return in 2024. Seaton, though, likely prefers left tackle (most five-star offensive tackles have their sights set on left tackle as it’s the offensive line position that gets paid the most in the NFL).
