Two University Of Memphis Football Players Suspended After Fight
Two University of Memphis football players have been suspended from the team, following a fight Tuesday on campus.
The two players who were suspended are wide receiver Jae’lon Oglesby and defensive back Kam Prewitt.
Hours after the fight one of the players became a victim of vandalism when his car was hit by gunfire Tuesday night.
At this time, officials said the fight and vandalism are separate incidents. University police is investigating the fight and MPD is handling the car that was hit by bullets.
Memphis police responded to a vandalism call in the 600 block of Patterson Tuesday around 10:00 p.m. They found multiple bullet holes in Oglesby’s Nissan Altima. One of the shots also hit a nearby apartment while the tenant was inside. No injuries were reported.
According to Memphis police, Oglesby did not see who shot at his car, but said he got into a physical fight with fellow Memphis Tigers player Kam Prewitt earlier in the day.
Tigers head coach Mike Norvell released the following statement early Wednesday evening.
“While the incident on Tuesday night is being investigated in conjunction with the University of Memphis’ Student Code of Conduct, and in consultation with Athletic Director Tom Bowen, I have placed Jae’Lon Oglesby and Kam Prewitt on indefinite suspension. I will make no further comments on this matter while it remains under investigation.”
U of M athletic director Tom Bowen released the following statement earlier Wednesday.
“We are aware of the incident involving two student-athletes on the University of Memphis campus yesterday and are cooperating fully with the investigation. All student-athletes are subject to the University of Memphis Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities, as well as University and athletic department policies.
In addition, we are monitoring a second situation involving shots fired at a student-athlete’s parked vehicle at an off-campus location. We have offered our full support to the local authorities investigating that incident.”
