Gardner Minshew: ‘That’s Something They Gotta Tell Me’ on the Colts’ 2024 NFL FA return
Gardner Minshew, the quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts, disclosed on Friday that he is about to hit free agency and that his future with the team is now uncertain.
According to Grant Gordon of NFL.com, Minshew responded, “Ain’t no tellin’ man, ain’t no tellin’,” when asked where he planned to play in 2024. “That’s something they gotta tell me, that free agency stuff.”
On Friday, the 27-year-old was selected as an alternate for the Pro Bowl. Following rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson’s season-ending surgery to repair a throwing shoulder injury in Week 6, Minshew became the full-time starting job. Despite the Colts’ final elimination in Week 18, Minshew helped kept the team in the AFC playoff race.
The 27-year-old played brilliantly in the latter part of the regular season, helping Indianapolis win six of its final nine games, despite some early setbacks. Minshew completed 61.5 percent of his passes for 1,905 yards and eight touchdowns against four interceptions over that nine-game stretch.
The former sixth-round pick helped the Colts’ No. 10 running offense succeed by providing solid play under center, even though he wasn’t beating teams with his arm alone. Minshew expressed gratitude for his time in Indianapolis even if he acknowledged the prospect of moving to a different location for the upcoming season.
He answered, “Just super grateful, man,” according to Gordon. “I was surrounded by a lot of wonderful folks this year. I really enjoyed it, dude. I wish it had never ended because I was so happy with the season we had, the work we did, and the guys we had.”
He’s performed well enough to merit a new contract worth far more than his $3.5 million salary in 2023, even though a return to the Colts is probably not out of the question (via Spotrac). If a rival team doesn’t entice him away with a possible starting position, Indianapolis’ front staff may still be able to get him back for a reasonable fee. Indianapolis anticipates having $66.4 million in cap space to use over the offseason.
