In recent years, Akira Toriyama, the creator of Dragon Ball, has shifted to offering general narrative guidance and character designs for many of the franchise’s projects. But the renowned mangaka will be heavily involved with Toei’s upcoming animated series, Dragon Ball Daima.
At today’s New York Comic Con, Toei Animation revealed that Dragon Ball Daima, a new series in which several iconic Dragon Ball Z characters, including Goku, Vegeta, and Bulma, will be transformed into children in a manner akin to Goku’s transformation in Dragon Ball GT, is well into production.
Executive producer Akio Iyoku hinted that Toriyama “has planned entirely new episodes for the storyline” and said that he is “deeply involved beyond his usual capacity” in the new show’s production during a panel discussion.
While Toei hasn’t shared many details about Daima, it did release a new trailer that makes it seem like the show might take a bit of a meta route with a villain aware of Goku’s lengthy history across different Dragon Ball anime and manga. The majority of the characters appear to be children for unclear reasons, and while it makes sense that someone would use the dragon balls to wish for it to happen, the trailer doesn’t specify who that person might be.
Whether or not the trailer reveals the plot, the animation is stunning, and Toriyama’s involvement suggests that when Dragon Ball Daima’s story debuts sometime in the fall of next year, it might have a little more punch than GT’s did.
