According to sources who spoke with Bluff City Media, rookie basketball players from Memphis, Mikey Williams and JJ Taylor, are utilizing the NCAA transfer site.

The 6-foot-3 guard Williams was signed by the program, but because of legal concerns, he never really joined the squad. On Nov. 30, Fox 5 San Diego reported, he entered a guilty plea to a single count of making criminal threats in relation to his nine gun-related felony counts.

His allegations are related to an incident that happened in March 2023 at his house in San Diego, California. Williams is accused of firing shots at a moving automobile carrying six persons, three of whom were youngsters, as it drove away from the house. He might have served up to 30 years in state jail if found guilty.

“There was a verbal argument about guests being asked to leave,” according to the first news release that was made public on April 12, 2023, and Williams struck the automobile, but no one was injured. December 14 was set aside for his trial.

Instead, he has entered into a plea agreement that will result in the dismissal of all other charges against him, including one for firing into an occupied car and five for assault with a deadly weapon. Prior to his sentence date of August 12, 2024, he must finish anger management and firearms safety classes. If Williams finishes the courses on time, the felony accusation against him will be dropped to a misdemeanor.

Williams was the subject of a statement from Memphis Athletics on Monday afternoon.

A portion of the announcement says, “We can confirm Mikey Williams has chosen to enter the transfer portal.” Williams made the decision to consider his choices at this time, even though the university was in the process of getting him to join the men’s basketball team.

Williams’ close buddy and former high school teammate is 6-foot-8 forward Taylor. He spent the majority of the Tigers’ non-conference schedule with them before he and Jonathan Pierre were suspended for Memphis’ Dec. 23 home game against Vanderbilt for disciplinary reasons.
