Nebraska announces a restructured contract for Tony White.

Tony White, Nebraska football’s associate head coach and defensive coordinator, has signed a restructured deal after leading the team to its best defensive performance in Big Ten history.

White was nominated for the Broyles Award in both 2022 and 2023, which is granted to the nation’s outstanding assistant coach.

White’s annual compensation has been upped to $1.6 million per year for each of the two seasons remaining on his contract, according to the provisions of the restructured agreement.

“Tony White has all of the qualities you look for in a coordinator or assistant coach,” Nebraska Head Coach Matt Rhule stated.

“He develops strong ties with his players and fellow coaches, and he is an excellent teacher and communicator. We made significant progress on defense this season, and I’m excited to continue working with Tony as we move forward and build this program.

Nebraska’s 2023 defense ranked third in the country against the run and fourth in overall defense. Eight Nebraska defensive players received All-Big Ten honors this autumn.

“I am proud of what our players accomplished this year and am excited to build on that success moving forward,” White said in a statement.

“It is a privilege to be able to coach at Nebraska and work under a wonderful leader in Coach Rhule, and I am thrilled to work every day with our defensive staff. “Go, Big Red!”

The statistical milestones for Nebraska’s defense in the first season under Rhule and White in 2023 were:

Nebraska allowed 303.5 yards per game in 2023, its best total defense average since 2009. Nebraska is ranked 14th nationally in total defense, the program’s first top-25 position since 2010.
The Blackshirts are ranked eighth in the nation in rushing defense, allowing only 92.9 yards per game, Nebraska’s best since 1999. In 2023, Nebraska kept eight of its 12 opponents to less than 100 rushing yards.
Nebraska’s opponents were limited to 14 or fewer points in eight games in 2023, and the Huskers are 17th nationally in scoring defense, allowing 18.3 points per game. This is the program’s greatest scoring defense average since 2010.
