Denver has a ton of alternatives to consider this summer, but if it decides to go with a rookie, it has the backing of a significant veteran.
Despite all the excitement that the Denver Broncos generated during the offseason, they have finished their second consecutive disappointing season. The Broncos were unable to make it back to the postseason despite the partial assistance of new head coach Sean Payton.
Now, as we approach the offseason, Denver will look to replace the quarterback. The team has decided to take a different path, so Russell Wilson will no longer be the starting quarterback.
It seems likely that Payton wants a signal-caller with whom he can develop, suggesting that they may select a quarterback in the forthcoming draft. Denver has the 12th pick in this year’s draft, and there are several good possibilities available.
When discussing the 12th pick with Patrick Chiotti, Broncos cornerback Chris Harris Jr. expressed his enthusiasm for selecting a quarterback. The two talked about J.J. McCarthy, the quarterback for University of Michigan, maybe being selected by Denver.
“I like the pick man, for sure, but because it will take some time to develop this player, folks might question that pick if we’re in a position where we’re Super Bowl or bust. Whether or not the Dever Broncos can exhibit patience will determine whether or when he emerges sparking hot. Be patient with him so that he can mature and eventually lead us to the promised land in his profession.”
McCarthy’s draft stock is at an all-time high after leading Michigan to a National Championship. He has the talent, but it’s unclear if he’ll be selected in the first round.
In 15 games with the Wolverines last season, he completed passes for 2991 yards and 22 touchdowns. With every season that he spent at Michigan, McCarthy got better, providing prospective NFL teams with an idea of the kind of player they would be getting.
It’s a waiting game because, as Harris notes, rookie quarterbacks often don’t win the Super Bowl. Occasionally, however, it can be very profitable to invest in a young quarterback.
We simply need to have patience with him and allow the child to develop. I believe the best course of action is to bring in some superstars since, as you can see, we now have a cheap quarterback. This allows us to load up on weapons.
The fact that McCarthy’s previous head coach at Michigan is currently coaching with the rival Los Angeles Chargers of the AFC West division is the sole drawback to Denver selecting McCarthy. Jim Harbaugh is probably aware of all of McCarthy’s advantages and disadvantages, which might provide problems for Denver.
If the Broncos liked McCarthy out of college, they wouldn’t let it stop them from drafting him. Though the circumstances surrounding the Broncos are still unknown, it appears that even the team’s veteran players are cool with them selecting a rookie quarterback.
