Rahman Mateen fractured his neck and spine and required a 12-hour surgical surgery. He is on a ventilator and still cannot move his legs. He has a long recovery ahead of him.

“I just turned around and started crying right there and it was really hard, but I know I had to be there for my brother,” said Rahim.

The family has set up a GoFundMe page to assist with his bills and has been paying him round-the-clock visits at Duke Medical Center. They expressed their gratitude for the support from the community.

Elijah Jayden Hawkins-Maynor, a friend of Rahman’s, also perished in the same collision.
