Under head coach Kalen DeBoer, the Alabama Crimson Tide football program is entering a new era.
Due to former coach Nick Saban’s retirement, a number of players from the 2023 roster have visited the transfer portal; however, a player declared his commitment to the new coaching staff on Thursday.
On his personal social media, former Washington quarterback Austin Mack declared his commitment to play for the Crimson Tide and accompany DeBoer in Tuscaloosa.
Mack, a redshirt freshman quarterback from Loomis, California, is 6 feet 6 inches and 225 pounds. He played with the Washington Huskies this past season, but he did not see action. He is still eligible for four years.
Despite graduating early to reclassify into the 2023 class, the 247Sports composite ranked him as the No. 16 quarterback in the class of 2023 and as a 4-star quarterback.
In his one year as a starter in high school, he only had five interceptions while completing 70% of his passes for 3,498 yards and 40 touchdowns.
For DeBoer and his offensive staff, the Alabama Crimson Tide’s quarterback room will now include Mack, redshirt junior Jalen Milroe, redshirt sophomore Ty Simpson, redshirt freshman Dylan Lonergan, and true freshman Julian Sayin.
While most recruiting services have projected high-profile 4-star edge rusher Noah Carter, who was previously committed to Washington, to enroll in the Alabama Class of 2024, Mack becomes the first player to follow DeBoer from Washington to Tuscaloosa.
Four players have now entered the Crimson Tide through the transfer portal, making up for the 27 players who have left.
