Former high school quarterback from Alabama signs with the Baltimore Ravens
Fans found undrafted rookie Malik Cunningham to be an alluring substitute for quarterback Mac Jones when New England’s offense faltered this season, leading the Patriots to the AFC’s worst record.
By adding the former Park Crossing High School standout to its active roster, where Cunningham played two games, and promoting him from the practice squad to active status for an additional two games, New England stoked the Patriots’ appetite for fielding a dual-threat quarterback.
Cunningham ultimately saw just six offensive snaps in 2022 for New England. He didn’t try to rush the ball or throw a pass. He also failed to catch a pass. Cunningham was signed by the Patriots as a rookie free agency in May with the intention of turning him into a wide receiver.
However, that won’t happen anytime soon since, as NFL Network and ESPN revealed on Tuesday, the Baltimore Ravens are adding Cunningham from New England’s practice squad to their active roster.
Cunningham said to ESPN that he had “learned a lot” from Bill Belichick, the coach, and Patriots owner Robert Kraft.
Cunningham declared, “Coach Belichick is one of the best coaches ever, so if I were to become a coach someday, I would definitely take notes from him.” “I made lifelong friendships and had fantastic teammates in New England. However, I simply think that this is a fantastic chance for me, and I’m thrilled to be a Baltimore Raven.
Cunningham and Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson are back together thanks to the signing. When Cunningham played a redshirt for the Cardinals in 2017, Jackson was the team’s starting quarterback. Following that, Cunningham started at quarterback for Louisville in the 2019–2020, 2021–2022, and 2022 seasons.
Cunningham joins Josh Johnson, Tyler Huntley, and Jackson as the Ravens’ fourth quarterback.
Cunningham moves from the AFC’s bottom-dwelling team to its top-dwelling squad. 3–10 is New England. The score for Baltimore is 10-3.
