Texas recruiting news on Early Signing Day for the 2024 class…
The 22 commits in the 2023 recruiting class, along with the addition of the two pledges from the NCAA transfer portal, are expected to sign their National Letters of Intent on Wednesday, marking the third significant recruiting step taken by third-year Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian in his ongoing efforts to mold the Longhorns program in his image.
Encouraged by the team’s on-field performance—going 12-1, taking home the Big 12 title, and securing a first-ever spot in the College Football Playoffs—Sarkisian and his staff managed to add some significant players to the class in the final stretch. On Monday, they acquired consensus five-star safety Xavier Filsaime from Florida and filled two important needs through the transfer portal—getting commitments from Houston transfer wide receiver Matthew Golden and Clemson transfer safety Andrew Mukuba.
On Wednesday, it will be important to see if Texas can retain Daingerfield athlete Aeryn Hampton and flip Texas A&M linebacker commit Tyanthony Smith. Hampton reaffirmed his commitment last week following a visit from Alabama head coach Nick Saban, but the presence of the Tide in any recruiting process is concerning—especially considering Hampton’s two prior decommitments to the Longhorns. Since Jimbo Fisher was fired a month ago, Smith has shown interest in the Longhorns; however, despite industry optimism that Smith will wear burnt orange and white, the coaching staff has struggled to get Smith on campus. Smith is scheduled to sign at 6:30 p.m. Central time.
In addition, the coaching staff is awaiting word from UTSA edge Trey Moore, who visited Alabama and Forty Acres prior to the start of the dead period on Monday.
Following the early signing period, up to three Texas prospects might still be available for selection — Baylor defensive line pledge Alex Foster has already declared in the open that he will continue to pursue his recruitment through February, and defensive line commits Dealyn Evans and Dominick McKinley from Texas A&M might follow suit.
