The Celtics are reportedly acquiring Xavier Tillman from the Grizzlies. Tillman could add depth to the front court.
The Celtics are apparently acquiring some front-line help ahead of Thursday’s trade deadline.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Boston will trade two second-round picks to the Grizzlies in exchange for forward/center Xavier Tillman. According to Wojnarowski, the actual picks will be 2027 (via the Hawks) and 2030 (via the Mavericks).
Boston will also send 26-year-old Lamar Stevens as part of the exchange.
Tillman, 25, has played 34 games for Memphis in 2023-2024, averaging six points and 20.6 minutes per game. The former Michigan State Spartan is in his fourth NBA season, all with the Grizzlies. He is recognized for his great defensive abilities.
He was originally picked by the Kings in the second round (35th overall) in 2020, but was traded to Memphis the following day.
The Celtics now have the NBA’s best record, 38-12. As Boston prepares for a possible postseason run, the addition of Tillman might help head coach Joe Mazzulla answer any doubts about the depth of the team’s bench.
Boston still has time to make more moves if president of basketball operations Brad Stevens sees an opening. The NBA trade deadline is scheduled for Thursday at 3 p.m.
