Premiership Demon traded to the Bulldogs.
Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs have agreed on a deal for James Harmes.
James Harmes, a Melbourne premiership player, has been traded to the Western Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs’ interest in Harmes, 28, was reported on Saturday by AFL.com.au’s Inside Trading, and the transaction was confirmed on Tuesday, with the Demons receiving a future third-round pick in exchange.
Harmes has signed a three-year contract until the end of 2026, adding depth to the Bulldogs’ midfield after Luke Beveridge’s team missed the finals in 2023.
“James comes to us with a wealth of experience, having played over 150 games and won a premiership during his nine years in the system,” Bulldogs list manager Luke Power stated.
“His defensive mindset and ability to cover the ground will add to our midfield group, while he also has the versatility to play in a variety of roles.”
Despite being signed with the Demons until the end of 2024, Harmes has been seen as a trade option by clubs this season.
The 28-year-old played nine games this season after drawing interest from Essendon during the Trade Period, having appeared in the Demons’ 2021 flag victory.
The strong-bodied midfielder has played 152 games for the club, but finished the season in the VFL when the Demons were eliminated from the finals series.
While Luke Dunstan and Michael Hibberd have retired, and Deakyn Smith has been delisted, James Jordon has left the Dees to join Sydney as a free agent.
“He has grown as a person and a player in our environment and has always shown genuine concern for his teammates and coaches,” Demons list manager Tim Lamb said of Harmes.
“We respect James’ decision to explore his options and seek greater opportunities, and thank him for all he has done for the Melbourne Football Club.”
