Snooker legend Ronnie O’Sullivan has stated that he will not enter next week’s BetVictor Welsh Open, citing concerns with stage fright caused by his nervousness.

Ronnie O’Sullivan has apologized to his supporters after saying he will not compete in next week’s Welsh Open.

The event is set to begin on Monday in Llandudno, but the Rocket, who has previously spoken about his mental health struggles, has withdrawn owing to’stage fright, spurred on by worry’.

In a post on social media, O’Sullivan said: “Good morning guys. I just wanted to let you know that I have decided not to play in Llandudno next week. It’s difficult to describe, but I’ve had stage fright on occasion for years, which was caused by nervousness. It is something I cannot forecast or control, but I do my best to handle it.

“I apologize to everyone who has purchased tickets, but I just can’t get my cue out while I’m feeling like this, and I believe this is the best option for me right now. I still want to be around the tournament, so I’ll be doing some work for Eurosport and hope to see you all there.”

The Rocket has had a rollercoaster few months, winning the UK Open, the Masters, and the Grand Prix while battling the game’s regulatory body.

He has recently withdrawn from some minor events in order to focus on his mental health, with the Welsh Open being the eighth ranking tournament he has declined to compete in. Before making the same decision at the German Masters, the world number one stated: “I love the event and the fans in Germany, but I need to prioritize my health and well-being.”

“It’s been a tiring and challenging season for me so far, despite the tournament wins, and I hope you understand. I’m sorry I won’t be there, but I hope to see you soon.”

He also opened up about his troubles during the Grand Prix, acknowledging that he would have to make a decision about his future: “I’ve had to think whether I can keep on, feeling how I’m feeling.

“It’s a battle, to be honest, and the worst part is that you keep winning tournaments. If I was getting excited first round every time playing like that, it would be a simple decision, but to be honest, I’m not enjoying it.

“I absolutely need a break, but it has been like this for 25 or 30 years, so it’s nothing new. It’s simply that it’s all I’ve ever known, and it was difficult not to do this years ago since it was my work.”

O’Sullivan’s difficulties away from the baize have coincided with a squabble between him and World Snooker Tour officials. Last year, a conflict emerged over some of the game’s top players withdrawing from tournaments to compete in showcase events in China.

His Masters final triumph over Ali Carter was also overshadowed by controversy, with the two players exchanging vehement words following the Ally Pally spectacular. WST officials were said to be looking into the incident when O’Sullivan told his long-time adversary to “sort his f****** life out” in a stunning post-match rant.
