After less than three months in the position, England legend Wayne Rooney was fired as Birmingham City’s manager, the Championship’s second-tier team said.
Since his contentious hiring in October, Rooney has only managed to secure two victories. Birmingham began the Championship in sixth place; now, he is down to 20th.

After taking over the team last summer, American investor Tom Wagner’s company fired popular coach John Eustace, who had led the team for 15 months and kept it out of relegation.

Carl Robinson, the first-team coach, and manager Wayne Rooney of Birmingham City have split ways as of today, the team announced in a statement. “Despite their greatest efforts, the outcomes have fallen short of the initial, clearly stated goals. Consequently, the board believes that the football team would benefit from a change in management.”
On Monday, Birmingham lost 3-0 at Leeds, and fans demanded that Rooney, the former England and Manchester United striker, be fired.
“I would like to thank Tom Wagner, Tom Brady and Garry Cook for the opportunity to manage Birmingham City FC and the support they all gave me during my short period with the club,” Rooney said in a press release.
Football is a results-driven sport, and I acknowledge that the team hasn’t performed to the degree I had hoped. But time is the most valuable resource a manager needs, and I don’t think 13 weeks was long enough to oversee the necessary improvements.
It will take me some time to go past this setback on a personal level. Since I was sixteen years old, I have been involved in professional football, either as a manager or as a player. I’m going to spend some time with my family right now while I get ready for my next managerial chance.”
The team announced that Steve Spooner, its professional development coach, will assume interim leadership.
Before joining DC United, Rooney managed Derby County for 17 months, during which time his club won.
