Quinn Ewers, a quarterback for Texas, is allegedly considering going back to school rather than entering the 2024 NFL draft.
According to Bobby Burton of On3.com, there is a “90 percent” probability that Ewers will play in Texas again the following season.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel said that although Ewers has had “early conversations” about going back to Texas, there is still “a long way to go.”
Ewers, a redshirt sophomore, is in his second year as the starting quarterback for Texas. Despite having four interceptions, he has completed his passes for 2,232 yards and 14 touchdowns while leading the Longhorns to a 9-1 record.
Ewers has demonstrated promise, yet it is illogical for him to declare for the draft. As the established QB1 and QB2, Caleb Williams and Drake Maye are joined by Ewers in a sizable secondary group that also includes Jayden Daniels, Michael Penix Jr., Bo Nix, and J.J. McCarthy. Shedeur Sanders of Colorado has also generated excitement, but his return for the upcoming season seems inevitable.
With a great season finale, Ewers might enter the QB3 conversation, but if the draft were to take place today, he would almost definitely be selected on Day 2. If the draft board does not go in his favor, he might possibly drop to Day 3.
Just the ambiguity around Ewers’ stock is sufficient to keep him around. As the starting quarterback for a Texas team that won a New Year’s Six bowl, he’ll probably make NIL more money than he would if he were selected in the second or third round of the draft. Ewers is expected to earn millions more if he returns for the upcoming season. He has already earned millions in NIL money.
It would be beneficial for Ewers to return and play Heisman-caliber football since it would enable him to increase his NIL war chest and draft stock at the same time.
