After missing the last week of the Houston Astros’ season due to an oblique injury…
Second baseman Jose Altuve may begin an injury rehab assignment on the team’s road trip, according to Houston Astros general manager Dana Brown, who made this announcement on the Astros’ pre-game radio broadcast on Sunday.
Michael Brantley and Jose Altuve both ran bases on Sunday in Anaheim, according to Astros manager Dusty Baker. Altuve must start before the Astros play the Rangers on July 24 if they hope to get him a rehab assignment before they head back to Minute Maid Park.
The Astros, who have already lost Altuve twice this season, would be happy to get him back.
After hurting himself during batting practice on July 4, Altuve was scratched by the Astros from his start. Altuve was placed on the 10-day injured list by the Astros two days later due to left oblique tightness. On Friday, Altuve was available for activation.
Altuve has been hitting from a tee as well as soft toss in addition to running bases.
Due to surgery to repair a fractured right thumb sustained during the World Baseball Classic, he was unable to play for the opening of the season.
With the exception of a brief hiatus from June 3–6, when he suffered a minor setback, Altuve has been playing almost daily since his return on May 19. That was an indirect hurt, that setback.
This season, Altuve is batting.264 with six home runs and eighteen RBI.
