Patrick Mahomes of the Chiefs has been voted the best by NFL players. ‘There Is Nobody Like Him’
Patrick Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, was the overwhelming favorite in a player vote to identify the best player in the NFL.
The Athletic conducted an anonymous player survey this week, and 46.4 percent of the 84 players who voted backed Mahomes as the league’s best player.
Mahomes won by a landslide, with Los Angeles Rams star defensive lineman Aaron Donald coming in second with 8.9 percent of the vote.
The top five were Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill (7.7 percent), Cleveland Browns pass-rusher Myles Garrett (7.1 percent), and Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson (6 percent).
Regarding Mahomes, one player who voted for him stated, “There’s nobody like him,” while another added, “Don’t you have to say him?”
A third player lauded Mahomes for keeping the Chiefs in games when he’s in the lineup, saying, “No matter how much you’re down, he can still bring your team back.”
Mahomes is the reigning NFL MVP and Super Bowl MVP, having won both awards twice in his career.
Mahomes is in his seventh NFL season, sixth as a starter, and is already a lock for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
The two-time Super Bowl champion has transformed the Chiefs into regular contenders, having won the AFC West and advanced to at least the AFC Championship Game in each of his five full seasons as starter.
Even after trading his No. 1 wideout, Hill, to the Dolphins before the 2022 season, Mahomes was still the top player in football last season.
He’s having a bad year in 2023 by his standards, and the Chiefs fell to 7-3 after losing to the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night, but they’re still only a half-game behind the AFC’s top spot.
Despite the Chiefs’ obvious lack of offensive weapons outside of tight end Travis Kelce, they will almost surely be considered the team to defeat in the AFC come playoff time due to Mahomes’ presence.
