The Houston Astros have already taken a number of important measures in the direction of winning the World Series again in 2024.
They agreed to a $125 million deal that extended Jose Altuve’s contract for an additional five years. To improve their chances of winning, they also added Josh Hader, one of the greatest relievers in the league.
But there’s a cloud of uncertainty hanging over Houston. The Astros may lose All-Star infielder Alex Bregman if a long-term contract agreement cannot be reached by both sides. This season marks the end of Bregman’s five-year, $100 million contract that he signed in 2019.
Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports that Bregman’s agent, Scott Boras, plans to assess Bregman’s value in the free market the following season.
Bregman is coming into his own, and if he chooses to leave Houston, a number of teams will want to have him on their squad. Although the Astros are not known for giving long-term contracts, they might give Bregman one, just as they did Altuve.
Since the Astros selected Bregman in the first round of the 2015 draft, the player has been a member of the team and has not given thought to leaving.
According to Brian McTaggart, Dana Brown, the general manager of the Astros, is prepared to extend an offer to Bregman to stay with the team; however, the exact date is yet unknown.
On February 24, the Astros will open spring training against the Washington Nationals.
