AP source: Bills QB Josh Allen diagnosed with a sprained elbow

.Orchard Park, New York. Josh Allen, the Buffalo Bills’ rookie starter, has been diagnosed with a sprained right elbow in his throwing arm and is unlikely to play this weekend in Indianapolis, according to a person with direct knowledge.

Allen’s status was stated as week-to-week rather than forever. The individual spoke with The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because the team has not disclosed the extent of the injury.

On Monday, coach Sean McDermott listed Allen as week-to-week, but did not rule him out of playing this weekend.

The Bills (2-4) were off on Tuesday, and McDermott is slated to speak with reporters when the team returns to practice Wednesday.

Allen’s injury, inflicted in the third quarter of a 20-13 loss at Houston on Sunday, forces Buffalo to choose between turnover-prone Nathan Peterman and newly signed veteran Derek Anderson to start against the Colts (1-5).

This season, Peterman has thrown four interceptions, including two in the last two minutes versus Houston. The second-year player lost his starting spot after struggling miserably in a 47-3 season-opening loss to Baltimore.

He is best known for throwing five interceptions in the first half in his debut game, a 54-24 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in November.

Anderson, a 12-year veteran, was coaxed out of semiretirement to join Buffalo last week to tutor Allen. Anderson, 35, attempted just eight passes in three games for Carolina last season and has not started a game in nearly two years.

Allen was picked seventh overall out of Wyoming and has a 2–3 record.

He was injured after being struck on both sides by Whitney Mercilus and Jadeveon Clowney. Mercilus hit Allen’s throwing arm just as the quarterback released the ball for a 39-yard connection to Kelvin Benjamin.

Allen bent down, gripped his arm in pain, and stayed in for one more play — an incomplete pass to Zay Jones — before dropping to one knee. He was then seen yelling in anguish as trainers inspected his elbow on the sideline.
