Milwaukee Brewers Welcome Back Banged Up Ace Brandon Woodruff on New Contract
Brandon Woodruff, a two-time All-Star starting pitcher who sustained a devastating shoulder injury last fall, has signed a two-year contract with the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Milwaukee Brewers have signed starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff to a multi-year contract, according to Jon Heyman of The New York Post on Monday.
According to Heyman, Woodruff’s deal will last two years, although no pay information has been revealed.
Milwaukee released Woodruff in November, just after he sustained a devastating shoulder injury. He was set to be paid $11.6 million in 2024 before being let go.
According to reports at the time, the Brewers attempted to sign Woodruff to a two-year contract, but negotiations fell through. After a full summer, Woodruff has decided to return to the organization he has spent his entire MLB career with.
However, the 31-year-old is not projected to pitch in the majors until 2024.
Aside from his injury troubles, Woodruff has been a fixture and leader in the Brewers’ rotation for the past few seasons.
Woodruff made his professional debut in 2017, but he really broke out in 2019 when he made his first All-Star appearance. He returned to the All-Star Game in 2021 and finished fifth in the National League Cy Young voting that season.
After a few strong starts to 2023, Woodruff was placed on the disabled list with a subscapular strain in his throwing shoulder. He didn’t return until August, and he only got 11 starts before having surgery to repair the anterior capsule in his right shoulder.
Over the past five seasons, Woodruff has a 41-23 record, a 2.93 ERA, a 1.015 WHIP, 10.7 strikeouts per nine innings, and a 15.8 WAR. Woodruff’s postseason record is 1-3, with a 3.18 ERA, 0.847 WHIP, and 12.7 strikeouts per nine innings.
In January, the Brewers dealt Corbin Burnes to the Baltimore Orioles, giving up one of their veteran starters. It appears they had done the same thing with Woodruff.
To fill the void left by Burnes and Woodruff, Milwaukee added top prospect DL Hall and signed San Francisco Giants veteran Jakob Junis. Wade Miley, a veteran, returned to the Brewers on a one-year contract.
