NHL Free Agents: 9 Worst Contracts in Colorado Avalanche History KEVIN GOFFX.com Logo July 20, 2011 The Colorado Avalanche has made bold moves in the past to give their team the best chance to win.
I took it.
It’s only been in the last five or six years that the Avalanche have really hit the ground running as free agents.
But over the years, there have been a number of trades and deals that have worked out very well for the Avalanche.

At the same time, like other teams, there were some deals that didn’t work out as the Avalanche had hoped.
Below is a list of the nine worst signings in Avalanche history (in no particular order).
Ryan Smith 1 OF 9 I’ll be the first to say I was very happy when the Avalanche signed Ryan Smith.
The team was trying to show fans that they still believed they could win before going into full rebuild mode.
He is a great leader who gives his all every second of every shift.
In that sense, it was a very good sign.
What made Smith’s contract so bad was the contract itself.
Smith, 31, signed a five-year contract worth $31.
25 million.
This represented a salary cap hit of $6.
25 million, which he never reached.
In the two seasons he played in Denver, he appeared in just 55 games and scored just 40 goals in one of those seasons.
This was partly because the whole team was in decline and they hadn’t admitted it yet, but also because the avalanche caught him after he had passed his peak.
When the Avalanche realized that his production did not match his contract, he was traded to Los Angeles and a formal rebuild began.
Smith is a great player who is very effective, but the contract he signed in Colorado was ridiculous.
David Corsi 2 OF 9 David Corsi came to the Avalanche in 2009 from the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Kosi was largely useless as a forward, scoring just two goals in two seasons with the Avalanche.
His main role was supposed to be that of an enforcer, but again, Kosi was never really able to do the job effectively.
Of course, it’s true that he only averaged about 3 1/2 minutes on the ice during his time at Colorado.
This contract got even worse when he was re-signed after one season of no use, only to do the exact same thing the next year.
Over the past two seasons, Kosi seemed to get the most out of Colorado coach Joe Sacco when he had someone to send a message to.
He said one thing: “I’d rather have you spend three worthless minutes on the ice than have you play the whole game.
” Indeed, his contract has no value.
However, in essence, Flathead was wasting his money.

Colorado Avalanche on X: "This is our Head Coach, Jared Bednar, and this is his third season. He's our first head coach to lead us to back-to-back playoff appearances since 2004. Also,
Very rare on the ice.
Tyler Arnason 3 OF 9 Really, the moment the Tyler Arnason photo was taken, the Avalanche should have known nothing good would come of it.
Arnason had a good first two years in the NHL, but everything fell apart soon after.
In his three years with the Avalanche, Arnason never scored more than 20 goals, and in his final season with the Avalanche, he only scored five goals in 71 games.
What’s even more strange is that Arnason was even appointed vice captain.
What is the character of the captain here?
I certainly couldn’t set a better example.
Arnason was without a doubt one of the worst signings in Avalanche history.
