The Tampa Bay Lightning
Still playing in an entirely atypical fashion, Tampa Bay is fighting to qualify for the playoffs.
The Lightning are one of the season’s biggest favorites, so we’re used to them winning cup matches with ease, but things now appear lot more difficult.
They lost a lot of points right from the start of the regular season, but each time there was a sense that they would be able to turn things around and regain some ground, followed by a string of disappointments.
They had only won four of their previous six meetings, with victories over the Islanders and New Jersey (4:2 and 4:1, respectively), but it is still good enough for eighth place in the Eastern Conference.
The Buffalo Sabres
Buffalo falls short as well. The Blades did not even attempt to interfere in the race for cup slots for a number of years in a succession, but they were just one win away from championship glory the previous season.
They played poorly for the majority of the season, and even if they have now improved, it is most likely too late.
Yellow-Blue has won five of the previous eight meetings, with its only losses coming from Florida twice (0:3 and 2:3) and Anaheim once (3:4).
Buffalo sits 11 points behind the top 8 in the Eastern Conference standings, in 13th place.
