Here are the free agents that the Houston Astros should be watching as they prepare for a crucial offseason, along with a couple that are presumably going to stay.

After suffering two straight home losses to their cross-town rivals, the Texas Rangers, the Houston Astros’ season came to an abrupt end. Now, the Houston team that is currently winning will only be winning for a brief period of time. The journey back to the mountaintop is then protracted and challenging.

Establishing the first order of business for the front office in Houston is not difficult. Following a remarkable career that concluded in the Astros’ 2022 World Series victory, Dusty Baker is retiring. Clearly a valued member of the team, Baker is adored both within and beyond the locker room.

Finding a coach with Baker’s caliber will be nearly difficult, but the Astros will need to find a sharp mind who can maximize the potential of a potent roster. At least through the upcoming season, the essential components remain in place. Yordan Alvarez has drawn similarities to Big Papi. The epitome of clutch is Jose Altuve. Bregman, Alex. Kyle Tucker. Verlander Justin. Somber Valdez. There is no denying the star power.

Houston will still need to make a few difficult decisions in free agency in addition to having a new strategic mind in charge. These are the players who are going to be gone, along with a select few who are guaranteed to stay.

Phil Maton is leaving the Astros in search of a better deal.
The Astros could use Phil Maton’s experience in the bullpen, and there’s reason to think the team would be interested in bringing him back. However, it looks like a profitable free agency window for relievers, so Maton will have plenty of suitors to choose from.

Upgrading should definitely take precedence over repeating the same group in Houston. Furthermore, the bullpen appears to be noticeably devoid of lefties. In an effort to add more variation and greater balance to the rotation, the team would sacrifice Maton.
