Yankees' Jimmy Cordero Suspended for Rest of 2023 Under MLB Domestic Violence Policy | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors | Bleacher Report

In accordance with its joint domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse policy with the MLB Players Association, Major League Baseball suspended Jimmy Cordero, a bullpen pitcher for the New York Yankees, for the duration of the 2023 campaign.

“Fully supportive” of the investigation process, the Yankees declared in a statement.

This season, the right-hander, 31, has made 31 appearances for New York. With 34 strikeouts in 32.2 innings pitched, he has a 3.86 ERA and is 3-2.

The last time Cordero pitched was in the St. Louis Cardinals’ 5-1 defeat on Sunday. After taking Gerrit Cole’s place to start the seventh inning, he pitched the remainder of the inning, giving up three earned runs on five hits.

Due to his suspension, Cordero will forfeit $340,648 in unpaid wages. In addition, he will not be included in the Yankees’ 40-man roster while he is serving his suspension.

It’s unclear what specific events led to the suspension.

In 2015, MLB and the MLBPA jointly approved a policy that gives the commissioner broad discretion to sanction a player who is the target of allegations of child abuse, sexual assault, or domestic violence.

The policy’s consequences can be met by the concerned player without them having to be officially accused of a crime.

MLB announced that Cordero “will participate in a confidential and comprehensive evaluation and treatment program” in addition to being suspended.
