Patriots open to trading QB Mac Jones; receiving interest…

It seems as though Mac Jones’ turbulent three-year tenure with the Patriots is coming to an end.

According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, clubs interested in the quarterback have been contacting New England and seem receptive to trade Jones. These teams have also reportedly been “doing work” on the QB.

Jones’ career started out with unexpected success as the Alabama product scored 3,801 yards and 22 touchdowns in his debut season, guiding the Patriots to the postseason.

Despite losing by a wide margin to end the postseason, confidence about the team’s future under center persisted.

Sadly, Jones would be at his finest in 2021. Over the next two seasons, he went through a significant regression, becoming a quarterback who often tried to heroically dig himself and the Patriots out of the offensive mud they were in, only to make devastating errors.

In 2023, Bill Belichick benched Jones—the former 15th overall pick—four times in favor of Bailey Zappe because he was so fed up with his mistakes.

By the time the campaign ended, it was impossible to predict what would happen with the Patriots.

A fresh start appears to be the wisest course of action for all parties, especially with new offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt recently acknowledging that “everything is on the table” under center, and new coach Jerod Mayo taking the helm.

Though Jones will need to demonstrate that he is not the signal-caller who has failed mightily over the past two seasons, he can still refer to his rookie tape as evidence that he can be a decent quarterback.

In the coming year, Jones might find himself on the yearly quarterback carousel. It’s unclear where it ends for him, but based on the tone of Friday’s article, it doesn’t appear likely to be in New England.
