The Michigan football team’s turbulent week came to an end on Saturday in Happy Valley as the No. 3 Wolverines defeated the No. 10 Penn State Nittany Lions 24-15.
Head coach Jim Harbaugh was suspended by the Big Ten for three games on Friday. The conference had claimed that the program had engaged in “an impermissible, in-person scouting operation over multiple years.”
Although he did not go to Beaver Stadium, where the Michigan rushing assault and a strong defense helped the Wolverines win handily, Harbaugh continued to travel with the team.
On 26 carries, Blake Corum gained 145 yards and two touchdowns via rushes. With 4:15 remaining in regulation after the PAT, he scored a 30-yard touchdown scamper to give Michigan a 24-9 lead after PSU turned the ball over on down.
Amidst a run-heavy strategy, Donovan Edwards added 52 yards and a touchdown on 10 rushes. In the second half, Michigan did not try to pass the ball once.
When needed, quarterback J.J. McCarthy performed admirably, completing 7 of 8 throws for 60 yards and adding 34 yards through rushes.
Drew Allar, the quarterback for PSU, was limited by the Michigan defense to just 70 passing yards and a garbage-time touchdown on 10 of 22 passes.
With that, the Wolverines improved to 10-0 and will host No. 1 Ohio State in Ann Arbor on Saturday, bringing their perfect record to a road victory away from Maryland.
Michigan fans were naturally ecstatic with the performance, especially following a week in which their program was the target of much criticism from the college football community.
