There have been numerous incidents of NBA players abusing drugs over the years. The league, which is known for its outstanding sportsmanship, has not been exempt from the widespread problem of drug misuse.
Players are therefore fined and forced to deal with the repercussions when they are discovered. They are either permanently barred from playing or suspended for a number of games.
Substance misuse has regrettably remained a mysterious issue throughout the association’s existence.
The league has seen the rise and fall of sportsmen who have given in to the seduction of drugs, from bright rookies to seasoned veterans.
The NBA no longer prohibits marijuana use, but it very surely does for other narcotics. The most recent victim is Tristan Thompson, who tested positive for SARM LGD-4033 and ibutamoren and was recently suspended for 25 games due to substance misuse.
The following seven NBA players have also been suspended for drug-related offenses.
Roy Tarpley was a gifted and promising player in the elite league who was born on November 28, 1964.
But he had a turbulent career filled with drug offenses, personal problems, and eventually an NBA ban.
His career in the league started in the mid-1980s when scouts noticed his ability as a center and power forward. The Dallas Mavericks then chose him with the seventh overall choice in the 1986 NBA Draft.
He had an immediate positive effect on the team, but problems soon ensued. Tarpley committed three infractions of the league’s drug abuse rules between late 1989 and early 1991.
He was rightly suspended after being detained twice for operating a vehicle while intoxicated. On the other hand, he was permanently barred from the NBA for the third time in October 1991 due to persistent infractions and accusations of cocaine use.
Tarpley was permanently barred for breaking the aftercare program, even though he was allowed to return two years later. Sadly, on January 9, 2015, at the age of 50, he passed away from liver failure.
