As the Ohio State football program prepares to open fall camp next week, Michigan is dealing with some unwelcomed off-the-field news.
The Wolverines head coach, Jim Harbaugh has been reportedly suspended by the NCAA for four games for recruiting infractions.
Yahoo Sports’ Ross Delinger was first to break the news, in which Delinger noted that the suspension is due to alleged false statements that he made to NCAA investigators last winter when his program first came under investigation.
This sounds like a slap on the wrist if you ask me as Michigan’s first four games are all at home against East Carolina, UNLV, Bowling Green, and Rutgers.
The allegations about Harbaugh’s dishonesty sound a lot like what former Buckeye coach Jim Tressel went through over a decade ago and for which he lost his job.
In related news to this investigation, former Michigan defensive coordinator and now Baltimore Raven defensive coordinator Mike MacDonald is expected to receive a one-year show-cause penalty for his role in all this as well.
Offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore and tight ends coach Grant Newsome are also expected to receive some sort of discipline.
This is a major black eye on the Michigan program right before the start of the season. Coaches lying to NCAA investigators is probably not a great way to win recruits over as they try to add the final pieces to their 2024 recruiting class.
This brings me back to thinking how lucky Ohio State is with Ryan Day at the helm. For all his flaws, Day seems to be a man of integrity and honesty. Something that clearly cannot be said about the Wolverines’ head coach.
