The fees brought in for the pair, who were sold to Sheffield United and Sporting CP respectively, were used to buy the likes of Haji Wright, Ellis Simms, Liam Kitching, Bobby Thomas and many, many more.
As we head into 2024 though, Mark Robins’ new-look side have yet to fully settle, but they have showed signs of promise in recent times, especially with the return to form of Callum O’Hare after nearly a year out with a knee injury.
Robins has generally a small squad in numbers, but there could be a need for several players – whether they are experienced or young – let’s take a look at three individuals who could use a departure from the Sky Blues in January more than others.
After showing flashes of quality for Rochdale in League One, Coventry took a punt on Portugal-born forward Tavares in January 2021, but there was no real expectation in the short-term for the youngster.
And as expected, he didn’t feature for the first-team in his first half season at the club, but once again in his first full season – 2021-22 – he wasn’t seen in many matchday squads – that was until February 2022 when he started to appear more, and late that month he made a real impact by scoring a stunning late equaliser against Preston North End at the CBS Arena.
Chances were still few and far between for Tavares last season though, but the 22-year-old’s season was ended in January when a ruptured achilles put him on the sidelines for the remainder of the campaign.
