TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State guard Tyreke Key will have season-ending surgery to correct shoulder instability issue head coach Josh Schertz announced Monday. The procedure will sideline Key for the remainder of the 2021-22 season.
“Tyreke’s decision to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery was the only choice after speaking with the doctor and looking at all available options,” head coach Josh Schertz said.
“Both in the short and long term, doing the surgery now gives Tyreke the best chance to have not only the basketball career that he wants, but the quality-of-life post basketball that is so important to all who care about him.”
Schertz continued: “While Tyreke is expected to make a full and complete recovery and will be in great hands, we know the rehab process will be a very challenging one for someone who is wired like he is.
Our staffs full focus moving forward will be on Tyreke’s recovery along with maximizing the group of players that we have in our locker room.
I know I speak for Tyreke and our entire program when I say we greatly appreciate the support he has received from our incredible fan base, and we all look forward to seeing him back doing what he loves in a few months. I promise the best is yet to come for #11!”
Key said of the injury: “With this being one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make, I will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery.
This is certainly not the way I envisioned this season playing out, but I do need to consider my health and my future of playing basketball.
I would like to thank you all for the continued support as this reoccurring issue will be resolved and I will mentally be at peace.”
