Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider stops a woman from choking at a restaurant.
Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider saved a woman’s life after noticing her choking in a restaurant, the team said on social media.
According to the Blue Jays, Schneider and his wife, Jess, were eating at a restaurant in Dunedin, Florida, when he witnessed a woman at a nearby table choking on her food.
The 43-year-old came to her aid and performed the Heimlich maneuver, a life-saving treatment to choking that the 6-foot-3-inch Schneider claimed he learned in school.
“I learned it around sixth grade and hadn’t thought about it since,” Schneider told the MLB website. So it was like, ‘I think I remember how to do this?'” I am a bigger guy, so I believe that helped a little. But, no, I hadn’t thought about the Heimlich technique since sixth grade.
With the woman safely breathing again, both parties resumed their lunches, though Schneider confessed he was “a little rattled afterwards.”
According to the MLB website, Schneider received a free beer as a gift for saving her life, which helped to calm his anxiety.
“It’s not like you’re looking for a pat on the back,” he told me. “She replied, ‘Thank you,’ and went on with her supper with her pals. We basically just said, ‘See ya later.’ Again, I wasn’t expecting a major compliment. I suppose I was more rattled than she was.”
Schneider’s wife told the Athletic that her husband reacted calmly to the event, which occurred in downtown Dunedin around two weeks ago.
“He gracefully gets up, doesn’t panic,” she went on to say. “The way he kept his cool, you’d think he was running a wild-card game. It was quite graceful.”
