It’s never easy replacing a program great, particularly when that great is star quarterback Drake Maye.
The UNC football team was extremely lucky to have Maye start for the past two years, as he combined for over 9,000 scrimmage yards and 78 total touchdowns.
Maye won ACC Rookie and Player of the Year in 2022, then played himself into an early, first-round NFL draft pick this past season.
Entering the 2024 campaign, which excitement is already starting to ramp up for, North Carolina has five quarterbacks on its roster.
The two arms leading that charge are Conner Harrell and Max Johnson, the latter of who is a 2-time transfer from LSU and Texas A&M.
A majority of Harrell’s playing time – last season – came in the Campbell game and Duke’s Mayo Bowl.
He scored his first two touchdowns against the Camels, then was part of yet another disappointing team bowl game effort against West Virginia.
Johnson has the experience under his belt, highlighted by a starting campaign for LSU in 2021, during which he threw for 2,815 yards and tossed 27 touchdowns.
Whoever starts for the Tar Heels, 2023 leading wide receiver J.J. Jones is excited about the battle.
