Coventry City transfer blow as midfielder signs for rivals

Coventry City transfer news from CoventryLive as one reported transfer target agrees a deal elsewhere

Coventry City missed out on one of their major January transfer targets, with Bristol City agreeing to sign highly-rated nAldershot Tow midfielder Josh Stokes.

BristolLive, our sister publication, says that the Robins will pay a fee in the region of £250,000 plus other add-ons in a deal that saw them beat off interest from the Sky Blues and Premier League Brentford.

Stokes has undergone a medical and is set to join City this week, after which the 19-year-old will be loaned back to the Shots for the duration of the National League season.

They claim that this issue aided discussions because neither Coventry nor Brentford were willing to agree to such a stipulation. Stokes, who scored in Saturday’s 4-2 defeat at Kidderminster, has 16 goals in 29 outings for Aldershot since joining from Isthmian League club AFC Sudbury for £5,000 last summer.

Among the add-ons will be additional appearance-based terms, a 10% sell-on, and the option to play a pre-season friendly at the EBB Stadium this summer, which should generate more cash for the non-league club.
