The Philadelphia Eagles have dealt with their fair share of highs and lows throughout the 2023 NFL season.
Fortunately, the good has outweighed the bad thus far as the Eagles enter Week 17 with an 11-4 record, which is sufficient enough for the NFC East’s top spot.
With the playoffs around the corner, the offseason isn’t much further behind. While many fans have gotten used to this season’s Eagles roster, changes are inevitable with free agency and the 2024 NFL Draft happening within the next four months.
In other words, expect to see some familiar faces leaving the City of Brotherly Love in the near future.
Here are five Eagles who are likely leaving Philadelphia at some point in the New Year.
When Miles Sanders departed for the Carolina Panthers during the offseason, the Eagles turned to a two-man backfield in the former of D’Andre Swift and Rashaad Penny.
Fast forward to Week 17 and while Swift has racked up 1,197 scrimmage yards and six touchdowns on a career-high 254 touches, Penny has become a complete afterthought.
The 27-year-old veteran running back has only appeared in two games this season, turning five carries into 17 yards while also catching one five-yard pass.
While injury issues limited Penny’s availability in past seasons, that hasn’t been the case this year. Head coach Nick Sirianni simply prefers to use Kenneth Gainwell as the team’s RB2, playing a big role in Penny being a healthy scratch for the last six games.
With Penny slated to hit free agency this winter, there’s no reason to believe that he’ll be back in Philadelphia.
The Eagles don’t have a use for him and he’d likely prefer to play for a team that’ll respect a rusher who averages 5.7 yards per carry in his career.
