Aston Villa transfer news live: First deal nears completion, details explained, FFP verdicts

Rolling Aston Villa transfer news and gossip from BirminghamLive as January transfer window hits halfway stage

A new week and new expectations for Aston Villa in the January transfer window.

So far, it has been a quiet month for Monchi and his recruitment team. The likes of Crysencio Summerville, Cyril Ngonge, Leonardo Spinazzola, Jonathan David, Paulo Dybala, Ronnie Edwards and Roony Bardghji have all been mentioned in despatches but little more than that. In fact, outgoings may be the order of this month with Bertrand Traore and Callum Chambers likely to be on their way if takers can be found.

Of course, a big reason for that could be FFP and the Premier League’s big push to bring errant spenders to book. Amid reports that both Nottingham Forest and Everton could be in trouble, Villa should be in the clear, but Unai Emery has already made it plain that transfer spending must be carefully watched.

That might help explain reports that Villa are ready to offload raw striker Jhon Duran this month to help finance their pursuit of Lille centre-forward David.

Meanwhile, the fallout continues from Sunday’s frustrating goalless draw at Everton, the first of Emery’s 97-game Premier League career. His team dominated the game but struck out against their dogged hosts and a marginal VAR call.
