Here are some thoughts on the latest news, and what it means going forward for ECU baseball.
East Carolina has lost one of its most talented young players, as freshman outfielder Bristol Carter has entered the NCAA transfer portal, sources confirm to Hoist The Colours and 247Sports.
Carter arrived on campus this past summer after turning down money in the Major League Baseball Draft and had a strong freshman season for ECU, hitting .346 with seven doubles, a triple, two homers, and 31 RBIs, primarily playing left field. He added four stolen bases and ranked second on the team with seven sacrifice bunts. Carter played in 56 games, making 46 starts. His playing time did start to reduce a bit down the stretch, and he finished the season 6-for-24 (.250) with only one extra base hit over his final 12 appearances in a Pirate uniform.
Known for his speed and athleticism, Carter only attempted five stolen bases on the year. He struck out just 23 times but his 12 walks also ranked lowest among ECU regulars, as he often put the ball in play early in counts.
During the Greenville Regional, Carter started the Friday game in left field against Evansville, and went 0-for-2. He didn’t make another appearance outside of a late-game ninth inning defensive replacement in the Sunday night blowout win over the Purple Aces.
Carter is the latest of eight ECU players to enter the portal this cycle, and probably the second most notable behind left-handed pitcher Zach Root, who entered on Wednesday. Both Carter and Root were expected to be potential focal points of next season’s team.
