Tennessee football had the second-lowest four-year Academic Progress Rate in the SEC, but coach Josh Heupel still earned a $50,000 bonus.
The NCAA on Tuesday released APR data encompassing the 2022-23 academic year. APR measures academic progress for all collegiate athletes on scholarship. The perfect score is 1,000, but Tennessee football scored 945 for four-year average.
The single-year mark was 965, which triggered a bonus. Heupel gets a $50,000 bonus because either his team’s single-year APR or multi-year average was at least 945.
Heupel accumulated $150,050 in bonuses during the 2023 season. The most recent contract extension for Heupel in 2023 raised his salary to $9 million annually.
Tennessee basketball coach Rick Barnes earned a $100,000 bonus because his team had a perfect score of 1,000 for the third year in a row. Both the four-year rate and single year rate for 2022-23 were 1,000 for men’s basketball.
Baseball’s APR rate was 978 for both the single-year and four-year timeframes. That means coach Tony Vitello gets a $15,000 bonus. Former women’s basketball coach Kellie Harper would have received a bonus for her team’s perfect score in 2022-2023, but she was fired earlier after the 2024 NCAA Tournament.
UT had 11 programs score 1,000s in 2022-23 and six programs that had four-year perfect scores.
“Our competitive championship culture starts with serious-minded men and women who are striving to excel both in their sport and in the classroom. The APR data demonstrates their remarkable success,” athletic director Danny White said in a school release. “Marshall Steward and his entire Thornton Athletics Student Life Center team are dedicated to enhancing our student-athlete experience by providing high-level academic support, professional development, and community engagement.”
Tennessee ranked second-to-last in both four-year and single-year APR scores among SEC programs.
For the four-year marker, Tennessee’s score of 945 was ahead of only LSU, which scored 934. The NCAA baseline is 930, and programs that fall under that number are subject to a variety of penalties.
For the single-year marker, Tennessee’s score of 965 was ahead of only Texas A&M, which scored 962.
Alabama, at 997, led the way in the SEC for the four-year score. The Crimson Tide scored 1,000 for the 2022-23 academic year.
