Leigh Leopards will sign David Armstrong after outbidding Newcastle Knights
In a dramatic U-turn, Leigh Leopards target David Armstrong is set to reject a new contract with his current club Newcastle Knights in favour of a three-year deal with the Super League side.

The Leigh Leopards, particularly Adrian Lam, have stated that full-back David Armstrong is a player they are interested in, with the first reports linking the Papua New Guinean full-back emerging early this year.

Lam explained at the time that the club had reached its quota and had been turned down, but they have continued to monitor the 23-year-old in the months since. During that time, Armstrong has emerged as Newcastle’s saviour, with starting full-back and captain Kayln Ponga injured.

Leigh Leopards, particularly Adrian Lam, have made it clear that full-back David Armstrong is a player they are interested in with the first.

According to the Telegraph, despite agreeing to a new contract just last week, Armstrong has informed club officials that he intends to leave and pursue a Super League career.

Newcastle had offered the 23-year-old a two-year contract, with the club competing with the Sydney Roosters and “at least one other club” to sign Armstrong, according to The Mole.

Fast forward a few days, and Armstrong’s future appears to be in England, with Leigh Leopards outbidding Newcastle and offering a more lucrative three-year contract.

Lam spoke in March about the need for a back after Tom Briscoe was injured, but he kept his cards close to his chest about Armstrong in particular.

He said, “I think it’s always an opportunity or chance to keep an eye out for players like that, and we’ve made it very clear that he’s a player I’ve followed, supported, and like the way he plays.

“I believe it is one that we will keep in our back pocket until an opportunity arises, or we will keep an eye out for that and other players who are available to help our team improve. He is definitely one of them.
