[Wrexham AFC] Ben Foster announces retirement from professional football

Served us well last year, stepped in when we had a keeper crisis, but he’s clearly not up to speed this year.

The last few games he’s looked slow and, although he’s by no means responsible for all the goals we’ve conceded, I’d expect him to be doing better.

I’m glad he’s been able to have the self awareness to call time.

27 Wrexham games, two trophies for us. Not a bad return.

How many people here are actually watching Wrexham games to confirm he isn’t cutting it and aren’t just talking numbers

I’ve caught two of the league games and nothing about his play really screamed ‘past it’ to be honest. Obviously he’s let in a lot of goals but from what I’ve seen Wrexham’s defense and midfield is the reason for that more than the keeping.

But you can’t argue with the guy, obviously he’s got a standard and if he says he’s not hitting it then you’d be inclined to believe him. He still ends his career as a legend in my eyes.

So far the goals conceded isn’t all on him at all. The defense has been weak, but you can clearly see that he isn’t up to it anymore.

Lots of harsh comments in here. Sometimes a player knows when the game is up, look at how Gary Neville retired mid season. He helped Wrexham get promoted but couldn’t carry that form into League 2, hardly a disgraceful was to end a career.

Met him in a McDonalds in Dublin after a night out at Christmas years back. As nice in person as he comes across in his vlogs. Absolute model professional and human being. Deserves a rest and to push on with making a career out of his podcasting now.

Really disappointed people are trying to dunk on him for it. I’m not sure they would have gotten promoted without him, he played really well last season but the quality of League 2 just required a lot more and he definitely was past it. I’m sure this is 100% the end but I’d bet Wrexham wouldn’t trade that time with him for anything because he showed the dressing room how a top professional handles their shit. Massive respect for anyone who can have the self-awareness to know when to stop for both themselves and the club.
